manger square. then looking out, you see the church of the nativity where there was midnight mass, standing room only inside the church of the nativity. that's where the latin patriarch declares the birth. it's the same grotto that alt pilgrims who are coming here over the couple days of christmas celebration are getting a chance to see. it's a very special place for many people a spiritual and holy place to be. christmas celebrations celebratn bethlehem are a month long celebration and they cull culmie on christmas morning when the boy scouts march in down into bethlehem and they lead the latin patriarch down in, lining the parade routes are the thousands of pilgrims who come out to experience christmas in bethlehem. many of them are americans who made the trip over here and they

say that being here and seeing this christmas, which isn't so much about santa and about gifts, as it is about the actual spirituality and the faith. they say experiencing these traditions that have been going on for so long and then get to go see the geography, exactly where the church of the nativity are and having the stories from the bible come alive bring them so much closer to their faith obviously on one of the most holy days of the year. back to you in new york. >> clayton: beautiful scene there. live in manger square, we'll check back later. because we know that when you get all the in-laws together, you get all the families together, there ends up being some siblings together, there ends up being some friction. that's a nice way of putting it. i'm sure many of you can relate to it. we have four ways this morning to avoid the fights that usually are associated with christmas. >> ainsley: what are they? >> rick: the first one is that people fight obviously over

money. christmas is such an expensive times and a love flats stem from that. so flying across the country to visit family is expensive and they fight over it. >> ainsley: a lot of people are staying put this christmas because it is so expensive. people are trying to save money right now. >> clayton: one of the other biggest reasons or ways people fight over money is because they say, and they say this to one another, we need to buy gifts for our kids, colleagues and college. >> rick: where does it stop? let us know where it stops for you. how many people do you buy gifts for? do you go down through all your colleagues? in my family, there is 25 of us when you have -- i'm one of five kids, and then you add in spouses and nephews and nieces and great nephews nephews nephe. >> clayton: do you buy one big gift? >> rick: maybe you can do a family gift. that's what we do sometimes.

my general thing is whoever is at home at christmas, when i'm at home, i get them gifts. but i'm not going to the post office to mail gifts to people. that's my personal general rule. but these things cause a lot of conflict. >> ainsley: if you're not celebrating until next weekend, you have the luxury of going to the stores tomorrow and you can hit up the sales if you haven't done shopping. >> i have not shopped at all. [ laughter ] >> ainsley: you'll get good deals tomorrow. >> rick: however, we're not celebrating 'til sunday. >> clayton: you get all the post-christmas sales. that's brilliant. other ways people fight over money at marks spending way too much money on parties. >> ainsley: yeah. >> clayton: a lot of people do that. the other way is that you should have asked me before buying that, something that couples say. you before you bought that. >> rick: you are both married. do you have that rule? >> ainsley: it can definitely cause a fight. >> clayton: she's very good. she handles the spreadsheet.

i'll sneak in some gifts. i bought some yesterday. and she said oh, that's sweet. i'll add things. >> ainsley: the key is marry someone who is responsible with their money, and then you don't have to worry about it. then you need your separate fund. >> clayton: you don't want to see on the account that you bought it at this place and you know what you're getting. >> ainsley: at least that worked for us. >> rick: marriage in the 21st century. when you get your christmas tree, people have different theories. some want a perfectly decorated tree and some people like the charlie brown thing. >> clayton: some like the understated tree. some like this one. now germans are hoping to clone the perfect christmas tree using some science from the firs so they give off the perfect glow and have the perfect stem and foliage. >> ainsley: they don't have open spaces in between the branches. >> rick: they're saying a lot of the trees they grow, after ten to 14 years after all the

weather that happens, a big percentage aren't any good. >> ainsley: send my father there. he'll buy them. my dad would always come home with the worst tree because he felt sorry for it. my mother would have to turn it around so the open spaces were in the back in the corner. >> clayton: he felt bad for a lonely tree? >> ainsley: yeah. i think really secretly the guy gave him a deal. that's really what it was about. >> clayton: it was in the discount section. >> ainsley: how about you? >> clayton: for a while my sister was allergic to christmas tree, so we had to do the artificial. i don't know if it was the pine, or i don't know what it is. >> ainsley: it's not pine sol. that's cleaner. >> clayton: oh [ laughter ] >> rick: my family, my parents, they do a fake tree now, which actually kind of makes a little more sense. but die not dee -- i do not do a tree because 360 square feet.

we have 275 of those square feet taken up with furniture. i don't have an excess space. >> clayton: get the charlie brown christmas tree. >> rick: people in milwaukee are experience ago major storm. now this morning there is more snow and freezing rain and some tornadoes that we'll tell you about. wild weather is threatening christmas travel for millions of americans. look at the weather maps. you can see it's very cold, zero in rapid city. this is a look at the radar picture right now. we've got big problems that are going to be brewing told. snowy component to the storm and spear weather component to the storm a. tornado watch box in effect across parts of texas and louisiana and then you see the colder air in there. this is a really dangerous situation. where you see the red area, moderate risk for severe weather, this is like what you would see in the spring with severe weather and the threat

>> rick: our next guest says it's about the people. peter johnson, jr. is here to tell us about a few christmas heros. >> merry christmas to you. and to all. i went out on twitter and i said, what is the most fulfilling christmas that you ever had? people tweeted me back. nell hunt said, my most fulfilling christmas was in 2006. i moved back to ohio from louisiana after katrina and was reunited with my family. that would be a happy day. from joel griffith, my 89-year-old mom still with me. god bless her this christmas, making it the best. she has a heart condition. from debbie devlin, my favorite is my daughters putting the angel on the tree and baking cookies with them. i've got some christmas heros and i think we all do. i know you do. you were tell ming me about some before we began.

two people that live the life of christ every day, they happen to be brothers and benedictine monks, father peter conley and be a dot glare conley who runs the abbott in still river, massachusetts. they are christians. they work every day for christ. they work every day to help the disadvantaged. the poor, the depressed, the people that need the love and grace of jesus christ. so they prove to be christmas heros each and every day. i know you have a christmas hero as well. >> rick: it's interesting hearing you say that. mine is another priest, father wassen. when i was in my 20s, i spent a year volunteer not guilty an orphanage in mexico. what people could think was a very sad and somber place, i remember always on christmas that christmas eve spent there with 7 to 800 kids in an incredible celebration and peace. the fact that this one man who started this orphan age with 16 kids turned that and gives so

much comfort to kids around the world. i always think about that on christmas. >> you think about the joy and hope of christmas. i couldn't think of a better example. then the example that we all know. when you were talking about it yesterday and i know today as well, the example of sandy hook and the heros who lived and died at the sandy hook massacre, there is a picture of kaitlyn, who happened to live and who saved about 15 children, locking them behind a closed door, not allowing anyone, including the police, to come in until she had proof as to who they were. she talked about the children and how they said, we want to see santa. we want to see christmas. we don't want to die. and she promised them you will see santa. you will see christmas. you will see hanukkah and they lived. and so we pay tribute to her as a christmas hero and to all the brave women, teachers, psychologists, principals, heros all who gave their lives, some

we actually just popped our heads in a little while ago. mass is still underway and there were still people making their way in. it began at 7:00 o'clock this morning. we can tell you at midnight mass, timothy cardinal dolan talked about the recent tragedy that the northeast dealt with. he talked about the shootings in connecticut and talked about super storm sandy and the need for everyone to cling to this day and everything that it promises, the christian faithful, and all of the hopes and beliefs that are wrapped up and associated and tied into this one particular day, december 25. the mental that came out at midnight. but again, there will be other masses throughout the day. so if you didn't make the midnight one, then you can come and check out one at 8 or 9:00 o'clock at st. patrick's cathedral. a little while ago in rome at the vatican, pope benedict wrapped up christmas day mass there. at christmas eve mass, what he talked about was the ongoing conflict in syria. he talked about the conflict with the arab and israeli communities there and he actually spoke about a need for

freedoms that we enjoy here in the united states. including the freedom of religion and the right to practice how we choose. and according to some of this year's recent polls, nearly 60% of the general public finding religion very important in their life. you can look at this poll here on your screen. and our next guest has spent some time reflecting both about faith and politics. fox news contributor juan williams is with us from dc with his analysis. good morning to you. >> good morning, ainsley. merry christmas. >> ainsley: merry christmas to you. so i recently was watching one of the morning shows and i saw joel osteen, the pastor from texas, being interviewed by a local morning anchor and he was asking about his faith and he said -- and then about politics. and he said i try not to talk about politics because it divides people. but you, juan, you have a way -- i know you're very faithful, but you also talk about politics and it's injure job. so how do you set faith into -- fit faith into politics? >> for the whole of america and american politics, religion is

oftentimes been i think a centerpoint and not always positive, which is why i hesitated and some politicians i think use religion as a hot button to drive or divide voters one y or another and at times to say i'm a fellow christian and who are these other folks. but overwhelmingly, i think politics politics and religion are both good instincts. instincts that bring people together, prompt conversation, and overwhelmingly affirm a belief in god. three quarters of the american people are christian and on this day, i think that's particularly important to understand how dominant christianity is in american life and the second thing to say is even as we've seen numbers increase, that people who say they're unaffiliated in terms of religious backing, we've seen a tremendous increase in that over the last five years, it's also the case that most of those people who say they're unaffiliated say they have a deep and abiding belief in god, those people say they are

spiritual and this is a surprise to me, many of them, about 20%, pray daily. so maybe what they're disconcerted about tends to be organized religion and scandals, you know, ministers who as i say sometimes, use politics for their own ends, the tammy faye bakers, the extremes. but overwhelmingly, people or maybe the scandals in the church, but overwhelmingly, people still in this country are christians and have a deep abiding belief in god, even when they say they're unaffiliated. >> ainsley: it's two subjects that are very sticky, especially sitting around the table today, lots of families will be doing that. they always say, don't talk about politics and don't talk about religion. any advice for families out there that will be sitting around the dining room table? >> i think that the advice is to understand that they're sitting together and that, in fact, they're celebrating this day, the birth of jesus for the christian faith, in a way that suggests that you know what? there is something bigger than all of us. and again, when you -- is where

honest with you. look at the weather maps real quick. very cold air in place. that cold air in place is combining now with moisture that's coming from the gulf. you can see here, a couple things going on. there is a rainy and stormy side to this storm and there is a snowy side to the storm. so to the north end across the panhandle of oklahoma, and in towards -- excuse me, handle of texas, and oklahoma, significant snow. a big threat for tornadoes today. we're talking about a big swath here that could see very large and damaging tornadoes. so if you are in the south from houston eastward to around tuscaloosa and around pen is a clarks be prepared in the morning off to the east and throughout the evening to the east. the storm will move through the mid atlantic and into the northeast and a bull's eye of over a foot of snow for people tomorrow and thursday. so major, major problems for the next couple of days. >> clayton: for perhaps maybe new year's eve? >> rick: there is another storm

lines like that that make you remember the true meaning of christmas. so as families are tearing through all the wrapping paper this morning and enjoying the holiday feast, how can we remember the importance of this very special day? >> ainsley: joining us. >> rick: joining us is "god wants you happy," father jonathan morris. tell us about this. i think every year we if through the same thing that the christmas season sneaks up on us. we go to crazy about getting gifts and the food and everything ready and somewhere in that, something hits us and we think, wait. what's this all about? >> i think this year for many people, i know for myself, it snuck up much faster because we were dealing with some pretty big tragedies. at least here in the northeast with sandy, with the newtown, connecticut tragedy that the whole country certainly suffered. then all of a sudden, here we are. and the readings from the scripture that so many churches throughout this country are reading today, i think is what helps us print the context.

jesus is coming as the prince of peace, but then he's also coming to do his father's will. so he's born a beautiful little baby, but we know where he's destined to go. he's going to be on a cross. and when he says, i have come to do my father's will, it's for us. he's doing it for us. he knows that he is going to be dying on a cross at the hands of his own creatures. your hands and my hand. and the christmas message is certainly about family. it's about giving gifts. it's about joy. but it's also about redemption. it's about us saying, i am willing to start over again. and not only am i willing to start over again, but if i do, there is great hope. not only hope for renewed peace in our lives now, but as christians, we believe also renewed hope for eternal life. and that's why it's such a celebration within the christian community. >> ainsley: a great reminder 'cause there are a lot of people that are celebrating christmas this morning.

-- things changed in their household. maybe they lost someone they loved or were diagnosed with cancer. so to have that hope message, it's very important. >> what's most inspiring to me in these days is when i get phone calls or e-mails from people, even in my own parish who are home bound and not going to be with my family, who do not have the blessings that so many us have. and who are saying that they are living the christmas message by uniting their own sufferings and their own loneliness to the sufferings of jesus because they have understood what this christmas is all about, what the message is all about. so no matter where you are, no matter what you're doing, christmas is able to be lived, it's able to be lived deeply, and that brings deep and lasting joy. the presents are good, too. >> ainsley: if you do believe in christ what, a celebration in heaven that they're having, birthday party. >> that's right. >> rick: thank you very much for getting up. >> i'm off to my own church.

hammar was locked up on a weapons charge. he tried to legally bring an antique gun across the border. it was clear to do travel with him on the u.s. side. but when he reached mexico, he was detained. a christmas eve shock for some texas families. a plane literal hee crashing in their backyard. >> sounded like thunder. >> thunder times 1,000. >> the house kind of shakes a little. >> bang. >> ainsley: the plane just took off from an airport near san antonio when it started having mechanical problems. the pilot tried to land, lost control. crashes into these two back yards where kids had just finished playing. >> just before that, they were climbing on this fence right here. >> we got very lucky. went right through the fence. we had that shed that slowed it down or i think it would have gone further. >> ainsley: amazingly, the pilot and his passenger were not injured. the neighbors were told it will take almost a week to clean up that mess. some brand-new video of the queen of englandrriving at saint mary magdalene church for her christmas mass. there she is.

sila. what are things looking like right now? >> good morning, rick. it is cold. it is icy and it is windy here in oklahoma city. we saw some snow and some sleet earlier, but none of that is sticking to the ground just yet. as i'm shoveling my feet here, we're getting a lots of ice and it's kept the oklahoma department of transportation as well as the city of oklahoma city real busy this morning. we're standing in front of a sand barn where we saw several trucks load up on sand earlier. i'm told that statewide the oklahoma department of transportation has about 550 trucks sanding the roads all across the state right now and i'm also told in the oklahoma city metro alone, there are roughly 1,000 road maintenance crews (inaudible). >> rick: thank you. i think we're losing your audio. a dangerous thing. you're getting icing on the roads and you'll get snow

afterwards and potentially that snow falling on top of ice, a very dangerous situation across areas of oklahoma. we'll continue to track that throughout the day. right now let's send it over to clayton. >> clayton: you know our next four legged friend very well. he was three months old when he was found on the side of the road after being brutally tossed out of a moving vehicle. today he's doing better than ever, we're proud to say. full of life and more importantly, he has a new home for christmas. joining us from a healing haven animal fund is joey's mom, dr. linda lowden and joey the dog himself. nice to see you this morning. >> nice to see you. >> clayton: so we say that many people probably know joey and certainly if they watch our show, they've seen him. but i'm sure a lot of folks don't know his story. can you take us back to the beginning and how this unfolded? >> yeah. joey was thrown from a car in a plastic bag and a good samaritan heard his cries and stopped her car, thank goodness, opened the bag and found a little puppy. he was about four months old at

the time. he was brought to the facility where i worked at the time with a broken neck. he was in severe shock. he had wounds all over him and was in severe pain. >> clayton: he had bite marks, which led you to believe that what? he was -- >> ainsley: probably. >> probably a bait dog, which means they use them outran the other fighters to get a taste of blood. he definitely came from an abused background. so that wasn't his first instance of abuse for sure. >> clayton: we have a positive message today on christmas. because now he has a home, he's living with you now? >> yeah, yeah. i couldn't let him go. we've been through so much together and it was such a wonderful story, i fell in love with him and he with us and so he stayed. >> clayton: take me to the recovery process. that had to be incredible. as a doctor, you're looking at this animal and thinking, what sort of a chance for life did you give him when you saw him?

>> you know, i really -- one, i didn't know he would make it through the initial shock. and i said all right. let's give him a chance and see how this goes. but then he was paralyzed in all four limbs. so i didn't think he would walk again, at least not walk normally. we want to do give him that chance to see what would happen. and it's really miraculous the way he's recovered. he's running like a normal dog. >> clayton: really? >> yeah, yeah. it's crazy. and it's wonderful. >> clayton: take me through some of the recovery process. when you did the surgeries, walk me through all of that and how he's been able to come out of it. >> well, he actually didn't need surgery, which was really surprising. >> clayton: really? >> yeah. we did physical therapy. he had a cast on his neck to keep it stabilized. and treated him for the pain and for shock and just kept him immobile and once it was healed enough, then we started physical therapy. >> clayton: the suffolk county spca is offer ago $27,000 reward

for any information that could lead to the arrest of these individuals. how is that investigation going? any word? >> i haven't heard any word. i know they're still on the case. they're taking it very seriously. they really want to catch these guys. so i know they're work really hard to do that. >> clayton: this is part of a broader message about animal abuse in this country. it's not just about joey, but this goes on all over the country. what message do you have for the individuals who want to help? >> your local spca, a spca are out there to help you. and also your local shelters and organizations like mine, healing haven are there to help stray animals who are injured who need a lot of medical care. >> clayton: specifically to help doctor with her cause and help other animals, if you would like to donate on this christmas, go to healing d havenanimalfund.org. just give a few dollars to help a few animals in desperate need.

the nativity where the pilgrims make their way in and down into the grotto where it says jesus was born more than 2000 years ago. last night christmas eve mass inside the church. it is a magical experience. standing room only as well as thousands packed in to listen to the message of the latin patriarch who talked about peace and blessings this christmas season, declared the birth of jesus and earlier took a bit of a political bend as he started talking about this is not only celebrating the birth of jesus and the birth of a palestinian state at the united nations. that is a feeling we've gotten here, a very different feeling in the west bank and chris mas past. the palestinian boy scouts led the procession along the star road from jerusalem to bethlehem. thousands of pilgrims out there to listen to watch. it is truly a magical experience. many americans say it is very different christmas here, much more spiritual, about their faith and

pictures. we asked for your pictures to be sent in for your white christmas. look at picture from green vil maine this picture from the fire captain in pennsylvania. more snow is coming that way. look at weather maps right now. a very big system. we have ice and snow across the panhandle of texas and into oklahoma and kansas. a big concern where the yellow box and redbox. that is new tornado watch in effect until 1:00 p.m. local time. we're looking at what could be a historic tornado event across parts of the south. you don't want to hear that about christmas and everybody going home thinking about christmas celebration. be careful and have a plan to get yourself in the safe area. this storm will pull tomorrow and thursday across areas of the northeast. a lot of areas getting dumped on with snow. your trip home tomorrow and

more victims from seven houses that burn down from an attack on firefighters in upstate new york. >> everybody here, when that alarm sounds, they all go. could be you. ainsley: an emotional vigil held last night in webster for two volunteer firefighters that were killed when responding to a fire. it was set by a convicted killer who opened fire on them. and two other firefighters were injured. 62-year-old women spengler killed himself. he spent 17 years in prison beating his grandmother to death in 1980. he was living with his sister who is still unaccounted for this morning. no word yet on a motive for this attack. a marine veteran spending christmas with his family after enduringing four months behind bars in mexico. fox news was there when jon hammar and his dad arrived back home in florida. >> turned this christmas into something spectacular. you guys have really made it happen. you and we're really grateful.
